September 18, 1951, exactly 70 years ago, Pamela Colman Smith died, an artist who painted for Arthur Edward Waite images for his Tarot deck, known as the "Rider-Waite Deck" (Rider - publisher's surname). Contemporaries also called her «Pixie».

She was a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn magical motto «Quod Tibi id Aliis» (lat. «What you have, others will have»). In 1903 she moved to Arthur Waite's “Independent and Rectified Rite of the Golden Dawn”. For all the time in the Order (until 1909), she did not rise above the Degree of the Zelator (1 ° = 10 °).

In her work on the Rider-Waite deck, Pamela used the Waite descriptions for the Major Arcana, and worked on the images of the Minor Arcana on her own. Unfortunately, the paintings that created the deck, subsequently disappeared without a trace. The Rider-Waite deck is currently the most popular of the traditional Tarot decks, many modern tarot lovers imitate the compositions depicted by Pamela Coleman-Smith. This Tarot displays the English system of tarot correspondences with Hebrew letters, but also, if desired, it can be applied to the French system.

Coleman-Smith had an active civil position, painted posters for the feminist movement, and during the First World War - for the Red Cross, made toys for charity sales.

In 1911, Pamela Coleman-Smith plunged into Catholicism. After the war, she moved to Cornwall, where she made a rest home for the priests with a chapel. She died in 1951, leaving behind a lot of debt.

About her it was said that her ability to wander in the realm of dreams truly knew no bounds; and even after awakening she kept an unapproachable silence; she never said anything of her own free will and did not answer questions except by compulsion and when it was absolutely necessary, so that her silence in itself seemed eloquent in its own way.

“Treatise Concerning the Reintegration of Beings into Their Original Spiritual and Divine Properties, Virtues and Powers”, was recorded by his disciples in lectures by de Pasqually.

Origin of Martinez de Pasqually is not known, it is believed that he has Portuguese or Spanish roots. He died while traveling to Haiti, where he went for his inheritance.

After Martinez de Pasqually died, there were at least two well-known students who somehow continued his work - Louis Claude de Saint-Martin and Jean-Baptiste Willermoz.

In 1772 he wrote the work "Le Diable amoureux", which, according to the story told, interested one of the Martinists who considered Jacques Cazotte initiated, because of the mystical and occult ideas described in his novel.

Jacques Cazotte firmly stood on the positions of monarchism, and was executed on September 25, 1792.

On 27 of September 1789, exactly 232 years ago, Cagliostro was arrested on charges of Freemasonry. The Inquisition accused him of warlocking and fraud. Lorenza, wife of Cagliostro, testified against him. Cagliostro was sentenced to be burned, but Pope Pius VI replaced it with a life sentence. He was also sentenced to repentance in the church of Santa Maria, while his magic books and inventory were burned at the stake. Cagliostro was placed in the castle of San Leo, where he died on May 26, 1795, according to some sources - from epilepsy, according to others - from poison, poured by prison guards.

On September 29, 1868, exactly 153 years ago, Henri Antoine Jules-Bois was born - a French writer, literary critic, journalist, occultist and theoretician of feminism, scandalously renowned for his connections with Parisian satanists and decadents.

Henri Antoine Jules-Bois was born in Marseilles on September 29, 1868 and from his youth he plunged into communication with representatives of Marseilles bohemia. In 1888, Jules-Bois moved to Paris and became the personal secretary of the writer Catulle Mendes. In the same year, Jules-Bois met Dr. Papus, Stanislas de Guaita and Joséphin Péladan, and collaborated with the Martinists. In 1889, Jules-Bois met Joris-Karl Huysmans and became a friend with him for many years. In 1893, Jules-Bois and Huysmans openly supported Joseph-Antoine Boullan, the notorious French priest, against whose activities Martinists were opposed. This led to a rift between the martinists and Jules-Bois. After the death of Boullan, Jules-Bois accused Stanislas de Guaita of a murder by means of a magical attack, for which he received a call to a duel from both de Guaita and Dr. Papus. Nobody was hurt in both duels.

Jules-Bois also received a call to a duel from his old teacher Catulle Mendes for his article published in 1893 and containing attacks on Christianity.

On January 6, 1894, Jules-Bois was accepted into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Jules-Bois acquired the ominous reputation of a Satanist, one of his books, “Satanism and Magic”, published in 1895, was included in the Vatican Index of Prohibited Books.

In 1900, Jules-Bois traveled to India, and at the end of this trip he rejected Eastern practices and suddenly decided to convert to Catholicism. Then he wrote the book “The Invisible World” (1902), which contains attacks on the occultists with whom he was familiar.

The last part of his life Jules-Bois spent in the USA, he actively wrote articles for the “New York Magazine” and “New York Times”.

Jules-Bois died of cancer in a French hospital in New York on July 2, 1943.
