Learn what web hosting is, how it works, the types and its benefits.

Let us start from the basics;

What Does Web Hosting Mean?

Simply put, web hosting is an internet service that allows you to publish your website online.

Without hosting your web files, your website will only be a bunch of beautifully designed files that no one can find or interact with on the web.

Does this mean that the only way your website can be available or found online is for you to host it? Well, yes and no.

If you own a blog and use Blogger or Wordpress free sites, you do not need hosting to get your website published online.

This is because your blog will be hosted on Wordpress and Blogger servers. However, you will not get a custom domain with this free website.

If you own a Blogger or Wordpress free blog, your domain name will look like this - myblogname.blogspot.com or myblogname.wordpress.com.

In order to keep your audience from knowing that you are using a free website, you can get a custom domain name like; example.com

The files that hold your website’s content (HTML, CSS, images, databases, etc.) need to be stored together in a location connected to the internet — a web server. Once the website’s files are uploaded to a hosting company’s web server, the host is then responsible for delivering the files to users

For developers building your site from scratch,
After working on a localhost, you need to upload your files to a server where people can interact with your website online.

This is called hosting.

We will be going in details:

Web development for newbies and tips for those already into web development

1. How to host your website, step by step

2. How to create a wordpress site, step by step

3. How to upload your files to the server( if you are building from scratch), step by step.

In part 2, I will be explaining how web hosting works. I hope you enjoy and learn something new.

How Does Web Hosting Work??

As I explained yesterday, your website is only a bunch of files. For them to be accessible online, you need to store these files on a powerful computer that is connected to the internet. This computer is called a "server" because it serves up your web files when people search for your website using your unique domain name or keywords related to your website.

However, the server you have hosted your web files on will not be able to serve up your website to people who may be searching for it if you do not have a domain name.

A domain name is your unique identity on the internet. It takes people who search for your web address directly to your website. So, while your web files may be hosted on a server, you need to give people its' location. This location is your domain name.

To host your website and get a domain name, you will need to purchase these services from businesses that provide them. Businesses that provide hosting services are called web hosting providers.

There are various kinds of hosting services that satisfy different website, software or application needs. I will share some of them and explain later.

.com. com.ng .org

These are domain extensions

example.com or example.com.ng is a domain name.

Once you have a domain name, you have an address where people can visit and view your files which are called up from the server where you hosted

Finally,

You should understand that domain and hosting are both required for a website to be visible online.
