👨‍⚕️ Which Skoltech students' project, born during the Innovation Workshop, caught the attention of plastic surgeons?

We'll tell you now. 👇

The Symmetra team has created a prototype device for 3D reconstruction and objective measurement of the anatomical dimensions of the human body. This device could help surgeons to identify the necessary points and intervals on a person's face for planning surgeries. The software developed by the Skoltech students is designed to track the results of surgery by comparing the shape of the face before and after the procedure.

Not only did the team win an award at the Innovation Workshop, but they also gained focused interest from potential customers for testing their system.

In our new video, the team tells about their rotational platform that captures images of the patient's face and dives into the software development process.

🔥 Scientists from Skoltech's AI Center were honored twice at the AI Journey conference by Sber.

🔸 PhD student and research engineer Nikita Gushchin won the national annual AI Leaders Award in the Scientist category. The award and a prize of 1 million rubles were given to him for the development of generative diffusion models based on the Schrödinger Bridge problem. Now he is working in Skoltech's generative AI group under the guidance of Alexander Korotin, the winner of the AI Leaders Award in 2023. In two years, Nikita has published six papers at international A* level conferences: three at NeurIPS, two at ICML, and one at ICLR.

🔸 Vladimir Zholobov, Evgenia Romanenkova, Sergey Egorov, Narek Gevorgyan, and Alexey Zaytsev were recognized as authors of the best AI Journey Scientific Journal paper. Their paper “Universal representations of well logging data using ensemble self-learning models” will appear in the special issue of the journal “Reports of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Mathematics, Informatics, Management Processes". The team received 1 million rubles for winning first place in a competition of cutting-edge research in the AI and machine learning field, which featured more than 230 teams from 11 countries.

👏 Congratulations to our heroes!
🤩 Four Skoltech researchers awarded with Sber Science Awards

In the “AI in science. The Physical World” nomination, the winner is Professor Alexander Kvashnin from the Energy Transition Center, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the head of the scientific group of industrial-oriented materials search at Skoltech. The prize was awarded for using artificial intelligence, including neural networks and regression models, to predict and study the properties of new functional and structural materials, such as high-temperature superconductors, super hard materials and non-crystalline structures.

The winner in the “Digital Universe” nomination is Professor Evgeny Burnaev, a scientist in the field of artificial intelligence, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and the director of the Skoltech AI Center. The prize was awarded for fundamental results in the field of theoretical foundations and artificial intelligence technologies for solving large-scale problems of engineering, medicine, and sustainable development based on deep learning methods and algorithms, generative modeling, and stochastic analysis of multidimensional unstructured data with a complex internal geometric structure.

The winner in the “AI in science. The Digital Universe” is Assistant Professor Alexander Korotin, a researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, and the head of the research group on generative artificial intelligence at the Skoltech AI Center. The prize was awarded for developing algorithms for generative artificial intelligence based on optimal transport for modeling multidimensional data, digital processing, and image synthesis.

Evgeny Antipov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, the head of the Department of Electrochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Professor at the Energy Center of Skoltech, was recognized as the best in the “Physical World” nomination. The prize was awarded for the creation of high-temperature superconductors and new materials for metal-ion batteries, which open up prospects for improving energy security and transition to climate neutrality.

The winners in the “Physical World” and “Digital Universe” nominations will receive personal prizes of 20 million rubles. This year’s awards in the “AI in Science” category were introduced for the first time. Its laureates — young scientists under the age of 36 — will receive prizes of 4.5 million rubles each and one million rubles for cloud computing.

🎤 We collected the presentations of Skoltech scientists at international conferences and workshops over the last month.

▪️ The Material Discovery Laboratory headed by Distinguished Professor Artem R. Oganov held the 22nd online USPEX workshop. The workshop covered a range of topics related to the algorithms of the USPEX program, which is utilized by over 10,000 users globally to predict a wide variety of materials, including catalysts, superhard materials, and high-temperature superconductors. About 1000 participants from more than 70 countries registered for the workshop.

▪️ Researchers from the AI Center participated in the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining, a prestigious A*-ranked international conference held in Abu Dhabi. Junior Research Engineer Alexandra Bazarova received the Best Student Paper Award for the study on spectrally normalized representations for change point detection. The award also recognized her co-authors — Senior Research Engineer Evgenia Romanenkova and Assistant Professor Alexey Zaytsev. Alexey also presented the second paper, which introduced insights from a VTB-supported competition to enhance adversarial defenses in transactional data models, offering improved mechanisms, a competition framework, and an open dataset.

▪️ Master's student in the Engineering Systems program (Skoltech Center for Digital Engineering) Zakhar Yagudin presented four works at The 2nd International Conference on Foundations and Large Language Models (FLLM2024) in Dubai: on AI-driven fast generation of robot behavior tree based on large language model, on VLM-based autonomous driving assistant with human-like behavior and understanding for complex road scenes, on LLM-based framework for robot ethical reasoning, and on mission planner for mobile robot based on robotics transformer model.
A warm atmosphere permeates all student events at Skoltech, but the Christmas party always feels especially cozy. 🎄

This year, master's and PhD students organized a festive quiz about New Year's traditions. The evening included a substantive part—especially for this gathering, Skoltech alumna Anna Ponomareva shared her insights on how to keep New Year's resolutions, discussing the SMART goal-setting system. And, of course, no party would be complete without some karaoke! 🎤
