beware of scams!

At the end of last week, I started receiving requests for a specific YCH. A Telegram user contacted me like many others do, saying “Hi, I’m interested,” but without specifying what they were interested in. I assumed it was about my latest post, so I asked, “This one?” and sent the YCH in question. The person replied “Yes.”

As I usually do with returning clients, I asked for a reference. Two days later, I received one. Right after that, I asked for their PayPal email, as usual. The person seemed confused. “Do you charge in advance? What country are you from?”

I found the question odd, since I’ve worked with international clients for at least 3 or 4 years and no one had ever reacted like that. I replied that I was from Brazil and asked why they were asking. They said, “Just curious.”

Then they said they preferred to send the payment directly to my email. Not too unusual—some clients have asked to do that before. Up to that point, everything seemed more or less fine.

But then the person claimed they had sent the payment, but PayPal was saying it was “on hold.” First thing I did: I opened my PayPal account. There was no indication that I had received anything or that anything was on hold.

I informed the client: there’s nothing showing on my PayPal. They asked me to check my email, saying it wasn’t the first time this had happened to them. They asked for a screenshot of the email, and I sent it—naively.

The email (from a completely unofficial sender) claimed that: I had received $25, but it was on hold because my account was not a business account (spoiler: it was!), and that the client would have to send an additional $100 to “unlock” the bussiness account. Then, I would supposedly receive the $25 + $100 and then, refund the $100.

The person said, “I’ll send you the $100—can I trust that you’ll send it back to me? Don’t worry, this has happened to me before, you can trust me.”

And that’s when I ended the conversation. I said, in short:
“Absolutely not. You should resolve this with PayPal directly.”

Conclusion: The person was blocked by me and deleted the entire chat history this morning. This just confirmed the bad intentions behind the interaction. Stay alert, everyone—unfortunately, scammers are becoming more and more creative!

❤️ Prefer sending invoices to your clients instead of receiving direct payments.
❤️ Always check if the sender of any email is official and trustworthy.
❤️ Always verify your PayPal account and check the “Activity” section to see if the client’s claims match what’s actually there.

Today begins the Brasil FurFest, the furry convention of Brazil!
