On June 24th we are celebrating the birthday of a great American orthodontist, Charles Henry Tweed.

We invite you to join our study club on this memorial day at 19:00.

Our clinical topic is titled ‘Extraction patterns in Class II patients’.

We will be having a very special online guest, Dr. James Vaden, who has been a course co-director at the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation in Tucson, Arizona since 1979.

Dr. Vaden served from 1999 – 2010 as the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Tennessee. He is the author of more than 50 articles published in peer reviewed orthodontic journals and has given more than 200 major lectures to national and international groups. He is a recipient of many prestigious orthodontic awards such as Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Teachers and Research Award, etc.

Dr. Vaden is going to give us a talk and he will also present a few of his cases.

A randomised clinical trial of thermoplastic retainer wear protocols

E Thickett et al. Eur J Orthod. 2010 Feb.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19828592/

• There was no statistical difference between full-time and part-time uses of thermoplastic retainer

• The degree of relapse is similar in terms of overjet, arch length, inter-molar width, inter-canine width, and irregularity index at any time point.

Asking patients to wear their retainers only during night-time appears to be an acceptable clinical practice.

When evaluating alignment efficiency and space closure time, which of the following is the most efficient?
Anonymous Poll
0%
Passive Self-ligating brackets
50%
Active Self-ligating brackets
50%
Conventional brackets
A randomized clinical trial compared Self-ligating (active, passive) and conventional brackets in terms of alignment efficiency and space closure. It was concluded that;

1- Time to initial alignment was significantly shorter for the conventional brackets than for either the active or passive self-ligating brackets.
2- There was no statistically significant difference in passive, active, or total space-closure times among the 3 brackets under investigation.
We’ve just selected two nice cases that James Vaden will be presenting during our meeting on 24 June. There will also be one case from Danny and one from me.
