We commemorate our SG Bicentennial this year. Hundreds of thousands have visited the Bicentennial Experience at Fort Canning. Due to overwhelming response, we have extended the show till year end!
We have overcome many difficulties in our journey from Singapore to Singaporean. Faced with change, we adapted. Faced with setbacks, we found solutions. We need these qualities more than ever.
We invest heavily in education to give our young the best possible start in life, so that anyone who works hard will have a chance to succeed, regardless of background. This is meritocracy in SG.
We have doubled full-day preschool capacity to almost 180,000 places since 2012, enough for every child aged 3 & above. Now, young parents in newer estates like Sengkang & Punggol are happier!
We have upgraded the preschools. The new HDB void deck centres are better designed, and we have built mega centres too, like the PCF Sparkletots centre at Punggol.
We set up MOE Kindergartens. By operating kindergartens, MOE gains direct experience, and raises industry standards. We have 24 now, and will more than double the number in the next few years.
We set up the National Institute of Early Childhood Development (NIEC) to upgrade training for preschool teachers & raise their standing. It enrolled its 1st students this year!
We continue to make preschool more affordable. The income ceiling for means-tested subsidies will be raised from $7,500 to $12,000. This means 30,000 more households will qualify from next year.
Govt bursaries for uni students will be significantly enhanced, from 50% to up to 75% for general degree fees; and for poly diploma programmes, from 80% to up to 95%. These will apply from AY2020.
Medicine has the highest course fees of all the uni courses. We do not want the cost to deter good students, so we will enhance Govt bursaries for medical school.
The commitment to do our best for every child is deeply embedded in our education system. We heavily subsidise school fees fr preschool to uni, poly/ITE. So every child can get a gd education in SG.
Our life expectancy is now the longest in the world - 84.8 years! Singaporeans are living longer and many wish to work longer. The Government will do our best to support older workers and the businesses that employ them.
Singapore is feeling the impact of climate change. Our weather is palpably hotter, rainstorms are heavier. For a low-lying island, we are particularly vulnerable to 1 grave threat: rising sea levels.
We set up a Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS), where a team of scientists & meteorologists, & supercomputers model the weather & do research on climate change. They also study our region.
We signed the Paris Climate Agreement & are committed to slowing down & ultimately capping CO2 emissions by around 2030. All Singaporeans can play a part in this by reducing, reusing & recycling more.
