In 1896, the Jameson Raidβa failed invasion ordered by Cecil Rhodes, a mining oligarch and freemason, to seize the Transvaalβoccurred just before the Second Anglo-Boer War, which alarmed Germany. The raid was staged to appear as if a revolution was unfolding in Johannesburg. Sounds a bit like Russia, right?
Documents from Sir Graham Bower, made public in 1946βfifty years laterβreveal that Joseph Chamberlain, a liberal unionist and colonial governor, secretly colluded with Rhodes.
Rhodes controlled the media, including the Cape Argus, which he purchased from Saul Solomon in 1881 through a proxy, Dormer, whose source of capital remained secret and the subject of speculation. Rhodes also sought to appoint Edmund Garrett as senior editor; Garrett covered the raid and protected those involved. The information communicated to London was carefully overseen by Rhodes himself.
