Kiryanovo

The country house for the famous Ekaterina Romanovna Dashkova, an educator and director of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, was built by Giacomo Quarenghi in 1783—1784. The architectural design of the mansion fascinates with its simplicity and brevity. The name of the estate comes from the names of Saints Cyrus and John — on their memorable day, Catherine II ascended the throne. The building is designed symbolically: for good luck, in the shape of a horseshoe.

It is said that during one of the Empress's country walks, her mare lost a horseshoe. Catherine II, being a superstitious lady, ordered to build a mansion in the form of a horseshoe for her close friend on that very spot. The order was executed.

After the death of Ekaterina Romanovna Dashkova, the estate was rented out for a long time. In the 1920s, the St. Petersburg Writers' Club was located here. Among the visi...

Kotomin House

In the 19th century, the house of merchant Kotomin became one of the most popular places among the representatives of the St. Petersburg intelligentsia. Famous poets and writers: Pushkin, Lermontov, Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky and many others gathered for a cup of tea in the cozy Wolf and Beranger confectionery, which was located in the building.

It was from here that Alexander Sergeevich and his faithful friend Konstantin Danzas went to the Black River, where a fatal duel took place for the poet http://kudago.com/spb/place/mesto-dueli-na-chernoj-rechke/ . Some time later, in Kotomin's house, Mikhail Lermontov read his famous poem “To the Death of a Poet” to his friends for the first time.

Here, in the Wolf and Beranger confectionery, in the spring of 1846, Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky met the revolutionary Petrashevsky. The writer attended meetings of Petrashevtsy, read wo...

Bolshaya Moskovskaya

Cars can drive on one side of the street, and on the other, even, there is a pedestrian zone. In fact, Bolshaya Moskovskaya is a continuation of Pravda Street.

The street received its modern name in 1857, before that it was Officers' Street, Bolshaya Officerskaya Street and even Bolshaya Afitserskaya Street - it is not known what is the reason for such strange grammatical metamorphoses.

The hero of the Russian-Turkish war, General Zhdanov, once lived in the house at number one fraction three, and academician-philologist Sukhomlinov also lived there, but at another time. In addition to this remarkable house on Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street, there is Vladimirskaya metro station and the Dostoevsky monument, the only one in St. Petersburg. It seems strange, but there are really no other monuments to Fedor Mikhailovich in the city on the Neva, the reason is that in Soviet ...

Opochininsky Garden

Opochininsky Garden is a relatively recently created garden, in 1937, on the site of a vacant lot. It was conceived as a small landscaped park. This green area, surrounded by rose bushes around the perimeter, is located on Vasilyevsky Island.

It has recently completed a major renovation. And in 2011, the Love Alley was founded, which begins at a heart-shaped metal tree. Newlyweds attach locks from their hearts to its branches, and put the keys into a fabulous forged chest, securely attached to the tree trunk. You can get to the Opochininsky Garden for free: everyone just needs to come to the Vasileostrovskaya metro station and continue walking through this small park.

It is noteworthy that every day there are more and more locks. During the summer months, the Love Alley is decorated with live plants and flowers, symbolizing the Garden of Eden for lovers who love to c...

Stele in the park of the Forest Engineering Academy

Monuments are often a reminder of sad events. Walking in the park of the Forest Engineering Academy, you can find a memorial stele.

On the morning of September 10, 1825, a duel took place on the outskirts of the park, and both participants died. Two young men were shooting — adjutant wing Novosiltsev and Lieutenant Chernov. The previous story is as follows: the heir to the huge fortune of his mother, who, in turn, inherited it from her father, Vladimir Novosiltsev fell in love with a girl from a very simple and poor family. But the young man's mother, Catherine, was categorically against their marriage, and forced her son to take his marriage proposal back. Her brother, Lieutenant of the Semenovsky Regiment Konstantin Chernov, stood up for the honor of the abandoned bride. The fatal duel took place in the place where the stele now stand...

Fortress wall

There is a place in St. Petersburg where all the buildings of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries seem to be modern. The view of it opens unexpectedly in the very center of the city, when you walk around the Ploshchad Aleksandra Nevskogo metro station. It seems as if we are in ancient Moscow, as we are faced with a rather extensive fragment of the Moscow Kremlin wall, red brick, turrets and arches. This wall is part of the Church of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God.

This temple is not old at all, it is about a hundred years old. It was built for the 300th anniversary of the reign of the House of Romanov on the initiative of Alexander III. The idea of architect Sergei Krichinsky was to recreate a piece of Moscow in St. Petersburg, with a temple in the style of ancient Rostov cathedrals surrounded by a whole complex of buildings and monuments. The complex was s...

Petrovsky Gate of Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter's Gate was built in 1708 according to the original project of the Italian architect and engineer of Swiss origin Domenico Trezzini. A special beauty to this unique structure is given by a carved wooden panel created by sculptor and carving master Konrad Osner. The panel is a symbol of the glorious victory of the Russian army in the Great Northern War (1700—1721), at the end of which, according to history, the Russian Empire began to emerge.

Since 1720, the arch of the Petrovsky Gate has been crowned with a Russian coat of arms in the form of a double-headed eagle, made of lead by the sculptor Francois Vassou. A year later, the coat of arms, whose weight exceeds one and a half tons, was painted and gilded by masters of art Alexander Zakharov and Ivan Uvarov.

Unfortunately, some elements of the sculptural decoration of the Petrovsky Gate hav...

Derzhavin Manor

After the death of the famous owner, the estate was taken over by the Roman Catholic Church. In the Soviet years, the estate was owned by the state and turned into a huge communal apartment. It was at this time that the main alterations inside the building took place, which changed the interior of the house beyond recognition. Almost nothing remains of the original beauty either in the interior or in the exterior of the building. The restoration of the architectural monument and its museumification began only in the late nineties. Now the Derzhavin Estate Museum is a branch of the All-Russian Museum of A. S. Pushkina.

The estate is an integral architectural ensemble of buildings: the main mansion in which the owner lived, two twin wings and a guest house. The interiors of the house are recreated in the style of the Catherine era. When developing the project, we relied on ...

Konstantin Pobedonostsev's grave

The school was built on the initiative of the abbess of the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent. The land was allocated by the monastery, the money was taken from the donations of parishioners, and the project was compiled by the architect free of charge. At first, it was a two-story building in the Byzantine style. It housed a church teacher's school, which was supposed to train teachers for parochial schools.

Konstantin Pobedonostsev, the Chief Prosecutor of the Synod, took a great part in the life of the school; his wife was the school's guardian for many years According to his will, both of them were buried near the school temple.

Today it is the city hospital No. 21, but the grave of Pobedonostsev can be seen to this day.

Ring house on Fontanka

The history of this amazing architectural masterpiece began as follows. At the beginning of the 1920s, merchant Ustinov decided to build an apartment house on an empty place. Architect Joseph Charlemagne was given a seemingly impossible task: to build a residential building in the center of the courtyard well so that it does not block the sunlight to neighboring houses, own residents isolated courtyard and at the same time it was comfortable and beautiful.

The architect chose the oldest form of human dwelling, first created in the Stone Age — a round house.

In the interior design, the author of the project foresaw ideas of constructivism that will become popular in Europe in a hundred years: a corridor with radially diverging rooms runs along the radius of the ring from the inside. The house also has two main entrances for four apartments.

The main four-story bui...

Carlson's house

To see the hero Astrid Lindgren's home, you will have to explore the picturesque courtyards of St. Petersburg along the Fontanka Embankment. On the roof of one of the houses there is a small cozy outbuilding with curtains and a miniature lantern outside.

In the courtyard where Karlsson's house is located, lives the Karlsson Haus children's theater https://ayr.app/l/WNAn. Legend has it that “a man in full bloom” settled in his St. Petersburg attic for a long time. True, he does not let anyone in, but you can get to know Carlson at a children's play.

Shih Tsa on Petrovskaya Embankment

A gift from the Manchurian city of Girin was installed opposite Peter's house on Petrovskaya Embankment when descending to the Neva River. This is a pair of mythical lions — guardians of the law, guards of sacred buildings. In ancient China, they are a symbol of success, the embodiment of royal power and power.

Each monument weighs 2.5 tons and has a height of 4.5 meters. Lions are arranged in pairs: the lion is on the right side, the lioness is on the left. The lion put his paw on the ball (a symbol of treasure and knowledge that brings light and drives away darkness, and at the same time fulfills wishes), the lioness holds a lion. The open mouth of the animal scares off evil demons.

The sculptures are made of granite and presented to the Governor-General N. Grodekov. He transferred them to St. Petersburg and handed them over to the city.

Khrenova's house

The building was erected in 1909 by architect Alexander Khrenova. In 2003, Eldar Ryazanov chose the legendary building for the filming of his comedy The Bedroom Key. In the film, they tried to reproduce everyday life in the age of industrialization, including an elevator, which, however, in one of the episodes, for some reason, opens the doors on its own. Although it was only possible to automate the elevator doors in 1926, engineer Houghton, much later than the action in the tape. Many famous architects lived in this house, including Vladimir Upatchev, the author of building No. 13 on line 12 of V.I.

A little further from house No. 5 along Tavricheskaya Street, there are other buildings, the author of which was the same Alexander Khrenov. In total, he built more than 30 houses in St. Petersburg, and could have done more, but in the 1920s he left troubled Russia and move...

Geophysical Observatory named after A. I. Voeykova

Back in 1849, Emperor Nicholas I issued a decree on the establishment of the Main Physical Observatory in St. Petersburg, whose mission was to “physical observations and tests”. It was here that the first scientific discoveries of Russian and Soviet scientists, the most important for the Russian school of meteorology and climatology, were born. In the buildings of this institution, the laws of cloud physics, atmospheric electricity, and physics of the boundary layer were revealed.

GGO studies the theory of climate and effects on atmospheric phenomena. Its specialists make long-term weather forecasts and monitor atmospheric pollution, determine the chemical composition of precipitation. They inform domestic and international aviation about weather conditions. Separate divisions of the observatory are developing new technologies, methods a...

Tavrichesky Palace

The Tavrichesky Palace is located between Tavricheskaya and Potemkinskaya Streets and occupies a whole block. This masterpiece of classical architectural art was built in 1783—1789 under the direction of I. E. Starov, who wanted to emphasize the greatness of the Russian Empire in such a big way. Initially, the building was designed for the favorite of Empress Catherine II Prince Potemkin.

The palace was one of the favorite places of Catherine II, where she often received guests. During the February Revolution, the building housed the Provisional Committee of the State Duma, as well as the Provisional Government until the summer of 1917. Rallies and demonstrations took place in front of the facade of the palace. A year later, it was renamed the Uritsky Palace, but this name was not destined to take root. After the Second World War, the palace building was restored, and ...

Historic courtyards on Gorokhovaya Street

In the historic courtyards, you can see an everyday painting from the 19th century. The first thing that attracts attention is the image of the gate, they are made so qualitatively that the picture seems to come to life before our eyes. In front of the eye is a balcony decorated with flowers, right on it a magnificent peacock is frozen. And below “down the street” you can see gentlemen strolling nicely, a bearded janitor at work and a young girl looking out of the window. All these characters are drawn so realistically that only a few moments later you realize it's a picture.

It should be added that it is not so easy to look at these unusual paintings from the past — they are hidden from prying eyes by reliable locks. Fortunately, the locals are kind and will surely let you admire if you ask them well.

Alexandro-Nevskaya Lavra

The relics of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky were also placed here in the monastery. In the summer of 1710, a wooden cross was erected on the territory of the Lavra — this date is considered the beginning of the construction of

Two years later, the first wooden buildings appeared here — the Annunciation Church and the Chapel, around which the monastery settlement was built. A year later, the church was consecrated, and Archimandrite Theodosy became its rector.

For convenience, monks built a road from the monastery to the Novgorod tract, which later became part of Nevsky Prospect.

Peter I, in addition to the spiritual monastery, intended to arrange shelters for the disabled and mentally ill here, but they were not opened. In 1720, a printing house was opened at the monastery, and a year later, a school, which later became the Theological Academy. Composer Pyotr Tur...

Kunstkamera Courtyard

This mystical corner is located in the courtyard of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography — it is here that unusual idols that were imported from South America at the end of the 19th century are located.

As it turned out, the idols in this courtyard are just copies of the famous gigantic statues that are still in the San Augustin Valley in Colombia. The originals were created really in ancient times — in the first millennium of our era.

There are several beliefs associated with idols. You can't lie here — that's why young girls come here with their loved ones to find out the truth about their feelings. An imminent punishment awaits the liar. In addition, locals say that these idols are endowed with such powerful magic that they cure any disease. Whether this is true or not, you can check for yourself by visiting this unusual place.

Octagon Courtyard

They appeared with the rise in price of land and an increase in the density of buildings. A lot of them have been preserved - from clean and comfortable to gloomy and stinking.

The well yard on Maly Prospekt of the Petrogradskaya side is known to many. Its distinctive feature is the octagon, which you will see when you raise your head. Perhaps this shape is associated with the octagonal Maltese star, as well as the courtyard of the Mikhailovsky Castle.

Cast iron wood has grown in the heart of the courtyard, which complements its atmosphere.

Birzhevoy Bridge

For a long time, Birzhevoy Bridge served as the only crossing over the Malaya Neva. It was almost impossible to implement the projects of other bridges, although they were gathering dust on the tables of many city architects. The reason for this was the financial difficulties experienced by the state, frequent wars and revolutionary events that were so rich in the first half of the 20th century.

The wooden base of the Exchange drawbridge — bulky, long and wide — had to be repaired frequently. As a result, it came to the point that the shaky hulk began to look very unpresentable against the backdrop of the architectural beauty of Northern Palmyra. Only in the middle of the 20th century, through the efforts of Soviet architects, Birzhevoy Bridge received its second chance.

Today it is one of the most beautiful in the city: its massive columns are decorated with pink grani...
