Narrated 'A'isha: Before Islām there were four kinds of marriage...
1. A man married a woman.
2. A man married a woman and sent her to be impregnated by a different man.
3. A woman has intercourse with around ten men at once and if she became pregnant, she would give the baby to whoever she wished and they could not refuse.
4. A prostitute would place a flag outside her home indicating anyone could enter upon her for intercourse which would result in large groups of men entering upon her. If she got pregnant, she would call a Qa'īf (someone skilled in recognising a child to their father), and whoever he claimed was the father could not refuse the child.
The Prophet ﷺ forbade all but the first.
