Ibn Qayyim said:
Allah says:
{And of the people are some who take besides Allah equals [to Him]. They love them as they should love Allah} [al-Baqarah: 165],
and He also says:
{All praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light. Then those who disbelieve equate [others] with their Lord} [al-Anʿām: 1];
that is, they make for Him an equal in worship, love, and veneration.
This is the "equating" (التسوية) which the polytheists affirmed between Allah and their idols. When in the Fire, they realize it was misguidance and falsehood. So they say to their idols—who are with them in the Fire:
{By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error (97) when we equated you with the Lord of all worlds} [ash-Shuʿarāʾ: 97–98].
And it is well known that they did not equate them with Him in essence, attributes, or actions—
nor did they claim that their idols created the heavens and the earth, or that they give life and death.
Rather, they equated them with Him in their love for them, veneration, and worship of them.
Just as you see today among the people of shirk—even among those who affiliate themselves with Islam.

He also said:
And likewise is His statement – exalted is He – regarding these mushabbihah (those who liken others to Allah): that they will say in the Fire to their false gods:
{By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error (97) when we equated you with the Lord of all worlds} [ash-Shuʿarāʾ: 97–98].
So they will admit that they were in the clearest and greatest misguidance—
because they made for Allah a likeness and an equal from His creation,
equating them with Him in worship and veneration.
