Remember that old ways of doing things still work for most things, in fact I think the only things they don't work for so well is tech related things.

-Using a washboard to wash clothes is just as viable as a washing machine
-Your grandpa's fishing pole (assuming there's nothing wrong with it) should be able to catch fish just like a modern one
-Your grandpa's .30-30 lever action will put down both four-legged game as well as two-legged game just as well as it did 60 years ago
-The way your grandparents preserved food work just as well today as they did back then

Never discredit old ways of doing things, just because more modern alternatives exist, and are more convenient at the moment.
