I once worked in a laboratory where we received samples every two hours to analyze. Everyone tried to bring theirs on time but they normally missed the mark by several minutes. However, there was one gentleman who always brought his, right on time. It was amazing.
Anytime he came in with a sample, the minute-hand of our clock was on 12. One day, I asked him about his secret and he said,
"I always start filling the sample bottles when it's 15 minutes to time. By the time I start moving towards the laboratory, I have about 7 more minutes because that's how long it takes me to walk here."
It was obvious that the other people didn't exercise that much discipline. Perhaps, they started taking their samples when it was time to submit them.
Moments after he left that day, I realized he had handed me a great key many people do not have in life.
The Lesson
The only way to chalk our successes the exact time we want to achieve them, is to start working towards them long beforehand.
Some wish to be billionaires by 30, many dream of having their honeymoon on a beautiful island and others want to have their first house by 25. Only a hand full of people are able to fulfill these goals because the process takes time and effort. Most importantly, you need to start the work early.
If you want to own 5 multinational companies by age 35, you cannot be a movie addict when you are 25. Your twenties are the time you have to learn hard, work hard and start building them. To be able to buy that private jet by 28, you should have your businesses making some feats before 25.
Perhaps, this is the same reason for which many New Year resolutions are not fulfilled. A lot of those New Year goals should have been started years ago for them to get accomplished that year.
So take some time today and draw out how you want your life to be in 5 years. If you are not rigorously working towards them already, better sit up and start now.

In the early 2000s, I was a young Sunday school boy trying to figure out what this life is about and how best I could play my part in it.
We were always encouraged at church to be good and obedient kids. I heartily imbibed the counsels and did everything in my power to live them out.
One morning, my mum asked me to polish her footwear. I decided to do it even beyond expectation.
I applied the polish on every side of the sandals, including the underside of the sole. If that wasn’t enough, I went ahead to shine it thoroughly with the brush.
I was pleased with myself until my mom came to put on the pair and the under-sole-polish stained her hand and the floor.
“Who polishes the underside of a shoe?” I remember she asked. “Now see the harm you have caused”.
I couldn’t believe the outcome of me going the extra mile to be good turned out this bad.
The Lesson
Later in life, I came to understand that too much of everything is truly bad. I used to think this saying was false for laudable acts like praying, giving, helping others and polishing a shoe.
But now I know that everything works best at their optimum level. Beyond that is deadly and below that is fatal.
If you don’t maintain a good level of balance in life, it is possible to possess a good heart and good intentions but still fail at life.
For instance, you must love and care for people, but there are people who will keep pulling you back if you give them too much of your attention.
And so despite your love, you must learn to keep a distance from such people for your own sanity.
There are myriads of other examples. Just think about it.

More than a year ago, I got a job that was really far from my place of residence.
I had to board car three different times in order to get to the office.
And worse, the journey to the office alone cost ¢30.
In total, I had to spend about ¢50 on a daily basis only on transportation.
It was crazy. I was really pained.
I decided I'd not settle on this huge cost and started to seek information regarding my journey to work.
A colleague named Emilia was really instrumental in showing me several possible shortcuts. In the end, my cost reduced from ¢30 to ¢9 and from ¢50 in total to less than ¢20.
The Lesson
What you may not realize in life is that information usually comes with a price tag.
The information I got from Emilia was worth ¢30 (that is, ¢50-¢20) a day. Just sum that up for a month and then a year.
Information on godliness, family planning, discovering your purpose, understanding the Grace of God, financial freedom, and the like can save you from so many troubles and costs in your lifetime.
That's why you should always seek knowledge.
When I read The Lean Startup by Eric Ries , I knew I'd stopped myself from ignorantly wasting millions on my future businesses.
When I discovered the truths I outlined in Reformed Or Deformed, I knew I'd be well-positioned for progress after university.
When I learned the vital principles I packed in Cheers and Tears of After-School Life, I knew I'd be fulfilled in life and my future would be bright and meaningful.
So my question to you is this:
What have you learned?
...because the more we learn, the more we earn.
