Ethereum (ETH) has recently surpassed Bitcoin (BTC) in terms of the USD transfer volume for the first time, CoinMetrics data shows. On Sept. 6, the dollar value of ETH transactions sent over the network reached $3.15 B while Bitcoin’s transfer volume was $2.94 B. The Bitcoin hash rate has hit an all-time high, according to data from Glassnode. The hash rate measures the processing power of the Bitcoin blockchain. For the integrity of the decentralized system to exist, complex mathematical calculations have to take place quickly. As Bitcoins are mined, blocks of verified transactions are given a new hash, and added to the blockchain. The hash rate has now broken above 140 exahashes (EH/s) per second, an increase from 129 EH/s reached last month. 🔗 Read more

Research and development arm of BitMEX announced that it has installed the Blockstream Bitcoin Satellite system which will allow it to download and verify BTC’s blockchain without internet connection. In essence, what one has to do is “install the satellite dish, point it in the right direction, connect it to a laptop running Linux and run some custom Blockstream software, along with a modified version of Bitcoin Core 0.19.1.”. Projects like this attempt to enable potential Bitcoin users located in remote locations or territories with very restrictive Internet censorship to communicate with the Bitcoin network. 🔗 Read more

The US Internal Revenue Reserve (IRS) plans to update a question on the 1040 income tax form for 2020 that will require all US taxpayers to check a box if they have transacted any cryptocurrencies over the year. Crypto exchange Coinbase has announced that it is now offering “instant withdrawals” in almost 40 countries including the US, the UK, and member countries of the European Union. Product manager Eddie Lo, said that customers based in the UK, Europe, and the U.S. are now able to withdraw their fiat funds using a Visa debit card that they have linked to their Coinbase account.
