The Indian state of Uttarakhand, home to the world capital of yoga, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in landslides caused by intense monsoon rains.
Since the beginning of the monsoon season in 2024, there have been 1,521 landslides in the state within 17 days.
From 1988 to 2023, 12,319 landslides were recorded in Uttarakhand, with a sharp increase in frequency in recent years:
• 2018: 216 landslides
• 2020: 328 landslides
• 2023: more than 1,100 landslides
• 2024 (current data): 1,813 landslides!
Consequences:
• 82 people dead
• 28 people missing
• 544 livestock destroyed
Data from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) confirms the rising landslide activity. The increase in the frequency and scale of natural disasters is becoming a global threat.
