The Harmonograph Explained...
The frequency of a pendulum's beat depends on its length and not its weight, the longer the pendulum the lower the frequency so the frequency can be varied at will by fixing a weight at different heights.
Most importantly as a pendulum runs down, it's frequency says the same. Here therefore is a perfect way to represent a musical tone slowed down by a factor of about a 1000 to the level of human visual perception. For a simple harmonic graph 2 pendulums are used to represent a harmony with the weight kept at its lowest point on one, while the weight on the other is moved to wherever it would produce the required ratio.
The harmonograph combines these 2 vibrations into a single drawing just as 2 musical notes sounded together produce a single complex sound.
