Week Ahead: 13–17 January 2025

πŸ”·The December 2024 non-farm payroll report, released on Friday, showed another rise and exceeded median analyst expectations.

πŸ”·While this data underscores a healthy labour market, it also triggered market volatility, as investors had anticipated a weaker reading to increase the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate cut.

πŸ”·The stronger-than-expected figures reduce the probability of two rate cuts in 2025, as previously hoped.

πŸ”· This rebalancing of expectations weighed on sentiment but should ultimately provide a clearer foundation for the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) decisions moving forward.

US & Hong Kong Market Outlook 1H25

Presenters:
* Paul De Vierno, Strategist, Private Wealth Management, UOB Kay Hian Singapore
* Curtis Yeung, Strategist, Retail Research, UOB Kay Hian Hong Kong

US Market Outlook 1H25
An engaging discussion on the U.S. financial markets, where we’ll explore the remarkable strength of stocks, especially large cap U.S. growth stocks, since the COVID 19 pandemic. We’ll take a closer look at parallels to the early 2000s, when the tech bubble burst. While large cap growth stocks bore the brunt of that downturn, small cap stocks, with their more reasonable valuations, weathered the storm better and went on to significantly outperform in the subsequent years. However, some argue today’s small caps may have less growth potential than in years past. Start up growth companies today remain private longer, going public only after reaching large cap status. This talk will shed light on how past market cycles can guide today’s strategies.

Hong Kong Market Outlook 1H25
Hong Kong stocks traded lower for most of 1H24, hitting a low in mid Sep 24 before rebounding strongly on policy stimulus. With the lower interest rate environment following the policy easing, we expect valuations to be better supported in 2025. A gradual recovery in domestic consumption in China is expected, as the policy easing announced in Sep Oct 24 gains traction. However, uncertainties over the Sino US relations will drive the potential re rating. There is also a major difference between trade war 1.0 and what China may face in trade war 2.0. This seminar will help you to see the big picture and draw up your investment plans.
