UOB Kay Hian (Hong Kong) Ltd private wealth management chief investment officer Wang Qi believes there is a β€œ70% chance” that AI is sustainable as a long-term growth driver for US equities.

β€œThe focus is on the long-term, while the short-term volatility is always a fact of life. Potential risks include the high concentration of AI stocks, including the Big Tech names accounting for a β€˜disproportionate’ percentage of the market; the lack of viable commercial applications for AI; and regulatory risk that may slow down AI development,” he tells The Edge.

U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Financials sectors led shares higher as lower-than-expected December core inflation data and solid earnings from major U.S. banks fueled a rally. At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.65%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.83%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 2.45%. Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2303 to 518 and 48 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2465 rose and 857 declined, while 98 ended unchanged.
