FBMKLCI Weekly Outlook
7-20 Sep 2024
πΉ This week will see a shortened trading period with only four active days, with some traders likely to extend their breaks due to the long weekend and school holidays. Despite this, recent activity on the local bourse and the recovery of the S&P 500, now nearing its all-time high of 5,670, have been encouraging.
πΉ Following a near 10% drop between mid-July and early August due to US recession fears, the S&P 500 has rebounded, driven by gains in high-beta sectors like technology. We expect this strength in global equities to support Bursa Malaysia trading higher next week. We anticipate the FBMKLCI to trade within the 1,650 to 1,670 range.

πΉIn early 2024, we introduced the "barbell strategy" for stock-picking, balancing AI and high-tech innovation on one end with consumer staples on the other. This strategy combines offensive and defensive plays to achieve superior risk-adjusted returns. So far, it has proven successful, with offensive plays like Nvidia (NVDA) up 138% YTD and defensive playslike Walmart (WMT) up 47% YTD, both outperforming the market.
In this CIO Series, we will go into details on how we apply Return on Invested Capital "ROIC" to pick defensive stocks in today's markets.
