إلَهِي الْوَيْلُ لِي ثُمَّ الْوَيْلُ لِي إِنْ أَنَا قَدِمْتُ عَلَيْكَ وَ أَنْتَ سَاخِطٌ عَلَيَّ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي لَيْسَ لِي حَسَنَةٌ سَبَقَتْ لِي فِي طَاعَتِكَ أَرْفَعُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ رَأْسِي أَوْ يَنْطِقُ بِهَا لِسَانِي لَيْسَ لِي إِلَّا الرَّجَاءُ مِنْكَ فَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ رَحْمَتُكَ غَضَبَكَ عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ عَفْوَكَ

فَلَمْ أَرَ مَوْلىً كَرِيماً أَصْبَرَ عَلَى عَبْدٍ لَئِيمٍ مِنْكَ عَلَىَّ، يَا رَبِّ، إِنَّكَ تَدْعُونِى فَأُوَلِّى عَنْكَ، وَتَتَحَبَّبُ إِلَىَّ فَأَتَبَغَّضُ إِلَيْكَ، وَتَتَوَدَّدُ إِلَىَّ فَلَا أَقْبَلُ مِنْكَ كَأَنَّ لِىَ التَّطَوُّلَ عَلَيْكَ؛ فَلَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ ذٰلِكَ مِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ لِى وَالْإِحْسانِ إِلَىَّ، وَالتَّفَضُّلِ عَلَىَّ بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ
.
پس هیچ مولای کریمی را بر بنده پستی، شکیباتر از تو بر خود ندیدم، ای پروردگار من، تو مرا می‌خوانی و من از تو روی می‌گردانم و با من دوستی می‌ورزی و من با تو دشمنی می‌کنم، به من محبّت می‌کنی و من از تو نمی‌پذیرم، گوئی مرا بر تو حق مهر و محبت است! و با همه این‌ها چیزی تو را از رحمت و احسان بر من و مهر و محبت همراه جود و بزرگواری‌ات بر من بازنمی‌دارد

During the Night of Ascension [mi‘raj], God said to His Apostle (S): “My servants can reach stages where My remembrance and gratefulness for My favors are their occupation and they do not care for anything else.” God then said:

وَلأ سْتَغْرِقَنَّ عَقْلَهُ بِمَعْرِفَتِي وَلأ قومنَّ لَهُ مَقَامَ عَقْلِهِ.

“I shall fill his intellect with My gnosis and I shall settle in place of his intellect.”

In a reflective part of the supplication, by recounting the divine blessings he has received, Imam Sajjad (a) describes himself and enumerates his shortcomings.

Allah shows His mercy and compassion to His sinful servant so that this servant returns to Him, as a friend. God does not say, “You rebelled against Me many times and committed many offenses.” Not only does He refuse to abandon His sinful servant but also treats him as if he had not committed any sin at all.

Once a person gives attention to these realities, the attraction between him and God will be strengthened and his love for God will increase.

The supplications transmitted from the Imams (‘a) are sometimes expressed in simple terms, they contain sublime points, and everyone is supposed to reflect on and benefit from them. The higher a person’s spiritual state is, the more he will benefit from these supplications.

The Supplication of Abi Hamza al-Thumali is narrated from Imam Sajjad (a) and is one of the most precious and well-known of prayers, enjoying a high status amongst great scholars. Abi Hamza al-Thumali, the narrator of this beautiful du'a, was one of the prominent students of Imam Zayn al-'Abidin (a) and this du'a has been named after him.
