📢 UK Housebuilding Update – What’s Changing? 🏘

The UK government has committed to building 1.5 million homes by 2029 to help address a long-standing housing shortage, currently estimated at over 4 million homes. This includes affordable, council, private, and community-led housing, supported by approx £2 billion+ in funding.

🔧 What’s New?

As of May 2024, councils now have expanded legal powers to compulsorily purchase land at lower cost — excluding what’s called “hope value” (the estimated future development value). This is intended to make it cheaper and faster to unlock land for public use.

These changes fall under the Levelling-up and Regeneration Act 2023, and aims to:

Speed up land acquisition

❌

Potentially reduce compensation costs

❌

Expand council-led development powers

But some are asking important questions:

Where will land be targeted?

Will communities be consulted?

Will housing be genuinely affordable?

⚠️ With the potential energy blackouts which are being discussed for the UK this year. We have created a letter and FoI for you to be able to enquire if it will impact you!

If you’re wondering why, or what it means for your home, business or bills — we’re asking the right questions, and you can too.

Here is a public letter template and FOI that you can use to tweak and amend - with some suggestions as to who you can write to are below;

✅ The Department for Energy
✅ Your local MP

📄 You can ask them:

– Are power cuts actually planned?
– Why can’t the grid handle renewable energy reliably yet?
– Will we still be charged during blackouts?
– Where is the public investment in energy storage?
– What protection is there for vulnerable households?

Hopefully this will enable us to push for transparency…
