The Wall Street Journal reports that the administration of President Donald Trump is quietly urging the U.S. Senate to soften proposed sanctions against Russia.

According to the report, the White House is particularly focused on persuading Republican Senator Lindsey Graham to water down his sanctions bill. Rather than prioritizing punishment over the Ukraine conflict, the Trump administration is said to be aiming for a broader normalization of relations with Moscow.

In recent weeks, White House officials and other agencies have unofficially reached out to Graham’s office, pushing for changes to the bill that would give the President greater discretion over whom to sanction and under what circumstances, congressional aides told the WSJ.

One proposed adjustment would be to replace the word “shall” with “may” — a change that would make the sanctions optional rather than mandatory.

Trump also publicly stated yesterday that he views the Senate’s proposed sanctions as excessively harsh.

🇺🇦 Targeted Car Bomb Kills Ukrainian Military Official Near Odessa

A high-ranking Ukrainian military official was killed in a suspected targeted explosion on the road between Odessa and Berezovka. According to local Odessa media, Colonel Oleg Nomerovsky, head of the 4th department of the Odessa Territorial Recruitment Center (TCC), died when his vehicle was blown up.

The incident occurred at approximately 15:39 near the stretch between Dobroslav and Berezovka. Preliminary assessments by explosives experts suggest a remote-detonated explosive device was used.

The destroyed vehicle, a Renault Megane registered to the Berezovka district TCC, was found completely incinerated. Human remains were discovered both inside the burned-out cabin and scattered on the roadway. Investigators noted that the floor under the driver’s seat had been completely obliterated by the blast.

Ukrainian authorities are reportedly treating the event as either a terrorist act or a deliberate assassination.
