Spanish outlet El Mundo has published new details about the assassination of Andrey Portnov, a former advisor to Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich.

According to the report, the killer was waiting on a motorcycle outside a school where Portnov was dropping off his children. As Portnov approached the entrance, the attacker shot him in the back—one bullet striking his neck—causing him to fall face-first to the ground. The gunman then fired a shot to the head, executing him at point-blank range.

The suspect remains at large. Police described him as a tall, slim male and have released a basic description.

Authorities are currently pursuing two lines of investigation: a contract killing by organized crime, or a politically motivated assassination.

Portnov had long been in open conflict with Ukrainian figures tied to the U.S. Democratic Party, who had called for sanctions against him and issued threats in the past. He was known for holding sensitive information related to Kiev’s post-Maidan leadership and had become a vocal critic of Ukraine’s Western-backed government.
