Next week’s planned prisoner swap—1,000 for 1,000—would be the largest since the start of the conflict. For Russia, it could mean the return of nearly all or the majority of its soldiers held by Ukraine.
The last official figure cited by Putin in June 2024 was 1,348 Russians in Ukrainian captivity. Since then, Russia has received 1,449 prisoners back in 11 exchanges, according to the Defense Ministry—already more than the earlier estimate.
Ukraine has claimed additional captures, especially during its failed incursion into Kursk region, where it alleged 909 Russians were taken prisoner by early 2025. But these numbers are unverifiable and likely inflated—only 218 have been officially returned from that area.
Across other fronts, Russian losses were far fewer, given Russia’s dominant offensive position.
Overall, Ukraine may hold at most 2,000 Russian POWs—likely less. If 1,000 are returned next week, Russia will have recovered at least half, possibly nearly all.
Meanwhile, Ukraine admits to having around 8,000 of its own troops in Russian captivity.
