๐ท๐บ๐จ๐ณ Russia and China Condemn U.S. Missile Defense Plans in Joint Statement
In a joint declaration, Russia and China sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed large-scale missile defense system, referred to as the โGolden Dome.โ Moscow and Beijing described the project as โdeeply destabilizingโ, arguing that it represents a complete and final rejection of the principle linking strategic offensive and defensive weaponsโa principle they say is essential for maintaining global strategic stability.
According to Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, the plan also envisions a significant expansion of space-based military capabilities, including the development and deployment of orbital interceptor systems. This, they warn, would turn outer space into a militarized zone and a potential arena for armed conflict.
The statement also voiced strong opposition to the AUKUS security partnership between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Specifically, it criticized efforts to build military infrastructure supporting the nuclear forces of two nuclear powers (the U.S. and UK) on the territory of Australia, a nation that is part of the South Pacific Nuclear-Free Zone Treaty.
More broadly, Russia and China accused Western nations of hegemonic behavior, including the creation of quasi-legal mechanisms used to pressure countries pursuing independent foreign policies. They also condemned what they described as attempts to rewrite history to serve short-term political interests.
The joint statement identified what it called โthe most pressing strategic risks requiring urgent resolutionโ, including the highly destabilizing expansion of existing and newly formed military alliancesโparticularly when such alliances are advanced by nuclear-armed states near the borders of other nuclear powers.
