As Victory Day nears, we’re revisiting classics that shaped how generations understood sacrifice, memory, and war.
They Fought for Their Country, 1975
Summer, 1942. The Red Army is retreating under the weight of the Wehrmacht's advance toward Stalingrad. In the midst of this chaos, a battered Soviet rifle regiment marches eastward — tired, wounded, but unbroken. Along the way, they rest in a village, dig trenches, joke, quarrel, and reflect. And when the Germans come, they fight. Not for ideology. Not for glory. But for their country — and each other.
Bondarchuk, already famous for his sweeping epic War and Peace, approached this film with a more grounded, intimate lens. Filming took place in the scorching steppe of Rostov-on-Don — where real WWII trenches and ruins were reused to enhance authenticity. Many extras were actual veterans, and the production had support from the Soviet Ministry of Defense, which provided equipment, advisors, and period-accurate uniforms. Despite its scale, this is a quiet film — about resilience, sacrifice, and the quiet heroism of staying alive and standing your ground.

🇬🇧🇺🇦🇷🇺“We were told never to be taken alive” — British fighter speaks to The i Paper about his time on the Ukrainian front
A British mercenary who survived fierce clashes with Russian forces in Ukraine shared his account of brutal trench warfare and near-death experiences. “Around June or July, the Russians began taking our trenches one by one — they flattened everything,” he said. “They were real professionals, though many had started as conscripts.”
He described a dawn assault where Russian troops used thermal blankets to avoid detection. “They crawled in close — just 50 meters away — and then launched a sudden, devastating attack. Two of my closest friends died trying to defend us.”
According to him, Ukrainian officers gave a stark warning: never get captured. “The Russians don’t like foreign fighters. There’s a high price on our heads. If it's a pro unit, maybe you get taken prisoner. Otherwise, you’re probably not making it out alive.”

🇷🇺⚔️ 🇺🇦 Ukrainian Forces Launch New Offensive into Russia’s Kursk Region
Ukrainian troops have begun a new assault on Russia’s Kursk region, attempting to cut off the border settlement of Tyotkino.
Overnight, Ukrainian forces used missiles to destroy key bridges in the area, and by morning, armored groups launched an attack.
Mine-clearing vehicles led the push, clearing paths through Russian defenses, followed by armored vehicles carrying infantry.
Intense fighting is ongoing near the border, with Russian airborne and other units engaged in repelling the assault.
Several Ukrainian armored vehicles have already been destroyed.
Meanwhile, a second attack is reportedly in preparation toward the nearby settlement of Novy Put’, with Ukrainian forces again attempting to breach minefields under the cover of poor weather conditions.

The EU is working on a plan to stop importing Russian gas by 2027. They're considering invoking force majeure to break contracts, but this would only work if Russia breaches agreements, which hasn't happened so far. Countries without sanctions on Russia, like Hungary and Slovakia, face challenges in severing ties. Legal experts say sanctions are the most effective solution, but unanimous approval from all 27 EU members is required—something Hungary has vowed to block.
