Spain's national grid operator, Red Eléctrica, has ruled out a cyberattack or unusual weather event as the cause of yesterday’s blackout—both of which were initially considered.

Instead, the failure appears to have stemmed from within the electrical system itself, triggered by two consecutive disconnections at power plants in the southwest, leading to a “total collapse.”

The spotlight is now on solar power. The sharp surge in photovoltaic energy fed into the grid during peak daylight hours is creating significant instability.

This issue has been escalating since last week, putting serious pressure on the grid operator.

Notably, Red Eléctrica had already warned of this risk two months ago, acknowledging the "short-term danger" of generation shutdowns due to the high penetration of renewables in the energy mix.
