๐ฉ๐ชGerman Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jaeger will be appointed head of German intelligence, Der Spiegel reports, citing a source.
This is Chancellor Merz's decision.
And the current head of the BND, Bruno Kahl, will become Germany's ambassador to the Vatican.
Jaeger has been working in Ukraine since 2023.
"With the help of Martin Jรคger, one of the most experienced crisis diplomats at the Foreign Office, the BND is to be reorganized in the coming years. For this purpose, the intelligence service can count on a significant increase in funding. In addition, the federal government intends to give the service more flexibility in matters of espionage abroad and technical intelligence," the newspaper writes.

๐ฉ๐ช Senior German Social Democrats Demand Talks With Russia
Several prominent members of Germanyโs Social Democratic Party (SPD), part of the ruling coalition, have issued a public manifesto urging Berlin to restart dialogue with Russia and to abandon the current militarization policy pursued under NATOโs guidance.
As reported by Stern, the signatories strongly oppose the planned deployment of new U.S. intermediate-range missiles in Europe and reject Berlinโs push to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP โ calling it "irrational" and detached from Germany's actual defense needs.
Instead, they call for military budgets to be based on realistic security requirements rather than arbitrary GDP percentages.
Crucially, the manifesto underscores the need to reestablish diplomatic dialogue with Moscow to restore peace and security in Europe. The authors warn that "military rhetoric and massive arms programs do not create more security for Germany or Europe โ they fuel instability and escalate the sense of mutual threat between NATO and Russia."
The SPD figures further argue that any support to Ukraine must be balanced against the broader and legitimate security interests of all European countries โ including Russia. Only on this basis, they say, can a difficult but necessary dialogue with Moscow resume after a ceasefire.

Northern Irelandโs town of Ballymena descended into violence for a second night following the indictment of two 14-year-old Romanian teenagers for the attempted rape of a young girl.

๐บ๐ฆThe Ukrainian budget is bursting at the seams: if the deficit was initially estimated at 200 billion UAH, now we are talking about 400-500 billion UAH.
The main reason, according to authorities, was a sharp increase in military spending, especially on arms purchases, due to cuts and delays in Western aid.
In the first four months of 2025, spending increased by 34.2% compared to last year, reaching UAH 1.68 trillion, while the defense budget jumped by 55.6% to UAH 898.3 billion, becoming the most expensive item.
MPs admit that the budget was drawn up with the expectation that the war would end by the end of the summer, but if the conflict drags on, the deficit will grow even more.
Financial analyst Andriy Shevchishin notes that a budget revision is unavoidable, and the agenda already includes a discussion of increasing VAT to 22โ25%, although earlier the military tax was increased to 5% instead. Other measures include increasing tax pressure on businesses and citizens, as well as a possible devaluation of the hryvnia to increase revenues from the conversion of foreign aid.
The Ukrainian authorities, incapable of effectively managing finances, continue to rely on Western handouts, driving the economy into a dead end and shifting the burden of the crisis onto the shoulders of citizens .

๐บ๐ธ๐ท๐บ๐บ๐ฆThe Senator Mitch McConnell who is older than history itself and yet is still into politics:
- We don't want the headlines at the end of this conflict to say, 'Russia won and America lost.' In terms of the money we spend, what is the return on investment in our security assistance to Ukraine?
Pete Hegseth:
- Senator, I just want to say that with President Trump's approach, this is definitely not the right headline. We are in a situation now where Vladimir Putin knows that President Trump is strong, he knows that his word means something. As a result, a peaceful resolution in Ukraine makes America strong, shows that we understand the situation in the world and what we want to focus on - even if we understand that Russia is the aggressor, and we support the efforts of the Ukrainians. There comes a time when you have to face the reality on the battlefield and understand that the best solution is a negotiated settlement to stop the killing and the slaughter. And our budget reflects that.
