🇷🇺⚔️ 🇺🇦 Medinsky to WSJ: Russia Ready for Long War, But Ukraine’s Stubbornness Will Cost It More Land
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky reiterated that Russia is prepared for a prolonged conflict in Ukraine—but warned that Kiev’s refusal to compromise will only lead to further territorial losses.
Medinsky noted that even the Ukrainian attack on Russian strategic bombers ahead of the Istanbul peace talks didn’t derail negotiations at the time. He emphasized that Moscow does not want a drawn-out war, but it will respond if Kiev continues acting on behalf of foreign interests.
“Russia can endure long wars—we fought Sweden for 21 years,” Medinsky said. “We don’t want that. We want peace. But if Ukraine keeps serving others’ interests, we’ll be forced to act.”
He stressed that Russia seeks to end the war not for Western approval, but because the conflict deepens divisions between two historically connected nations.
“This is like a quarrel between two brothers—one older, one younger—arguing over who’s smarter or more important,” he said. “That rift is growing, and that’s why we want the war to end as soon as possible.”

The upcoming NATO summit declaration omits any mention of Ukraine's future membership in the alliance, according to Bloomberg.
- The $40 billion annual aid pledge made to Kiev last year has disappeared from the new summit conclusions.
- Promises of long-term security assistance to Ukraine, prominently featured in 2023, have also been removed.
- This year’s draft does not accuse Russia of “aggression” against Ukraine — a stark shift from previous language, however it still mentions Russia as a threat to the alliance.
- There is no reference to China either, despite past NATO claims branding Beijing a key enabler of Moscow.
The new declaration reportedly focuses exclusively on defense spending. NATO member states are expected to commit to allocating at least 3.5% of GDP to core military needs by 2032, with an additional 1.5% directed at infrastructure protection.
