Moscow continues to take the Istanbul format seriously. Western and Ukrainian media attempt to spin this as “Putin being afraid of Zelensky” or “sending a junior team” to the talks. But nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is simply unpleasant: Russia isn’t flying to Istanbul for photo ops. They’re going to talk about hard facts—issues Ukraine doesn’t want on the table. The real situation on the ground.

It’s a strike team—sent to shatter delusions, confront fantasy with fact, and force a reckoning with the battlefield reality Kiev and its backers have been desperately trying to spin away from.

They’re not in it for show. They’re there to twist arms until they crack, to make it absolutely clear that Russia isn’t negotiating from weakness—and certainly not with actors still drunk on their own propaganda.

The fact that so many refuse to even acknowledge who’s at the table tells us all we need to know: the West isn’t ready for this kind of conversation.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy claimed that Zelensky’s visit to Turkey is a sign of his readiness for peace.
