🌍👨🏻‍🎓🇷🇺Russia strengthens geoscience ties with Global South through soft power

The inaugural World Geology Championship in St. Petersburg, organized by Russia’s Karpinsky Institute, brings together young geoscientists from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The event focuses on key disciplines like mineralogy, tectonics, and cartography — and serves as a platform for fostering professional exchange and scientific collaboration.

While major powers race for access to rare earth elements in places like Ukraine and the DRC, Russia is quietly investing in long-term influence by training and supporting geologists from partner nations. Through education, joint research, and scientific dialogue, Moscow promotes a model of cooperation based on knowledge-sharing rather than direct resource extraction.

This soft-power approach allows Russia to strengthen ties with the Global South, helping build local capacity while also positioning itself as a leader in sustainable resource development.

🇷🇺🕵️‍♂️🇺🇦 FSB: Over 640,000 Online Fraud Crimes Registered in 2024 — Ukraine-Based Scam Networks Exposed

Russia’s FSB, in coordination with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, continues to combat large-scale fraud schemes involving information and communication technologies. So far in 2024, over 640,000 such crimes have been registered, resulting in damages exceeding 170 billion rubles.

Authorities have identified between 120 and 150 active call centers operating from Ukrainian territory, coordinating massive scam operations targeting Russian citizens. These centers rely on IT infrastructure based in Ukrainian cities and some EU countries.

Recent crackdowns have led to:

➡️Shutdown of illegal virtual communication nodes
➡️Seizure of 1,200+ SIM-boxes, 1,000 modems/phones, and 1.2 million SIM cards
➡️Detention of 208 individuals involved

Ukrainian organizers reportedly instruct their Russian-based accomplices to:

➡️ Rent apartments on high floors of buildings (often above service companies) for brief periods
➡️Acquire and activate large quantities of Russian SIM cards under fake identities
➡️Set up and manage SIM-boxes using anonymous internet connections, forwarding control to Ukraine
➡️Rotate SIM cards frequently and use specialized software to stay undetected

In some cases, organized fraud rings travel across Russia to maintain operations. According to the FSB, proceeds from this fraud are used to fund the Ukrainian Armed Forces and nationalist armed groups.

🇮🇳⚔️🇵🇰 Pakistan Claims to Have Shot Down Five Indian Fighter Jets, India Yet to Confirm

A representative of Pakistan's military media wing, ISPR, told Reuters that Pakistani forces have downed five Indian fighter jets—three Rafales, a Su-30, and a MiG-29—as well as a drone.

"These actions were taken strictly in self-defense," the spokesman stated. "All of the aircraft had opened fire on Pakistani territory."

He clarified that the Indian jets were launching long-range strikes from within Indian airspace.

Meanwhile, in Indian-administered Kashmir, four local government officials told Reuters that three Indian fighter jets had crashed within the Jammu and Kashmir region. The Indian government has not officially acknowledged Pakistan's claims.

🇵🇰⚔️🇮🇳 Official Press Release: Pakistan Accuses India of Cross-Border Strikes, Vows Right to Self-Defense

Pakistan has condemned what it describes as unprovoked military strikes launched by India on its territory, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. The National Security Committee (NSC), led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, convened to discuss the developments and emphasize Pakistan’s right to respond in self-defense, according to an official press release.

On the night of May 6–7, 2025, Indian forces reportedly carried out missile, air, and drone strikes on various locations in Pakistan, including Sialkot, Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli. According to Pakistani authorities, the attacks targeted civilian areas under the false pretext of striking alleged terrorist camps. Pakistan claims these strikes killed several civilians and caused significant damage to infrastructure, including mosques and the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project.

In response to the attacks, Pakistan's military said it defended its territory and successfully downed five Indian aircraft, including drones. Pakistan’s National Security Committee condemned the actions, calling them violations of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to defending its borders.

Pakistan has consistently rejected India’s claims of terrorist camps on its soil. The government also pointed out that it had offered to facilitate an independent investigation into these allegations but that India had not accepted the offer. International media had already visited the sites on May 6, with more visits scheduled for the following day.

The NSC statement emphasized that Pakistan would continue to exercise its right to self-defense, as outlined in the UN Charter, and authorized the military to take further action if necessary. The Pakistani government called on the international community to hold India accountable for what it described as violations of international law.
