Victory Day is approaching, and every day we’re highlighting a Soviet film that reveals a different facet of the war.
The Cranes Are Flying, 1957
Not all war films take place on the battlefield. The Cranes Are Flying tells the story of Veronika and Boris — a young couple separated when Boris volunteers for the front. What follows is a heartbreaking portrait of love, loss, and emotional survival during the Great Patriotic War.
Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov and shot by legendary cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky, the film is a masterpiece of visual storytelling.
Upon its release, The Cranes Are Flying stunned global audiences, becoming the first Soviet film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. It remains one of the most poignant and artistically acclaimed war films in world cinema - a visually stunning, profoundly moving portrayal of how war scars the heart.

🇺🇸 U.S. Catholics Slam Trump for Post Portraying Himself as the Pope
American Catholics have criticized Donald Trump after he posted an image depicting himself as the Pope, drawing backlash for what many see as disrespect during a sensitive time for the Catholic Church.
The New York State Catholic Conference issued a statement saying, “There is nothing funny about this photo.”
🇻🇦 Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni declined to comment on the image during a briefing with journalists about the process of electing a new pope, which begins on May 7.
🇮🇹 Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi wrote on X: “This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the global right enjoys being a clown. In the meantime, the American economy risks recession and the dollar loses value."

You told one of your colleagues that you came, perhaps, to this chapel when Nord-Ost was happening and prayed
Exactly this one.
What events in the country or in the world have you also prayed about?
I have already tried to answer questions of this kind. The thing is that Russian people have some differences from Western society. We think more about something eternal, something limitless, something higher. And even atheists believe in this. That's how I see it.
Therefore, a person with such views, such convictions, such a moral code, from time to time has a desire to turn to the Almighty. I have such an internal need too. It is probably not worth listing all these reasons or causes.
Then, during the crisis with Nord-Ost, I knelt for the first time.
