Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov and shot by legendary cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky, the film is a masterpiece of visual storytelling.

Upon its release, The Cranes Are Flying stunned global audiences, becoming the first Soviet film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. It remains one of the most poignant and artistically acclaimed war films in world cinema - a visually stunning, profoundly moving portrayal of how war scars the heart.

I have already tried to answer questions of this kind. The thing is that Russian people have some differences from Western society. We think more about something eternal, something limitless, something higher. And even atheists believe in this. That's how I see it.

Therefore, a person with such views, such convictions, such a moral code, from time to time has a desire to turn to the Almighty. I have such an internal need too. It is probably not worth listing all these reasons or causes.

Then, during the crisis with Nord-Ost, I knelt for the first time.

ℹ️The Nord-Ost tragedy refers to the 2002 hostage crisis at a Moscow theater, where Chechen militants seized over 900 people during a performance of the musical Nord-Ost. The standoff lasted nearly three days and ended when Russian special forces used an undisclosed gas to incapacitate the attackers. While all 40 terrorists were killed, at least 130 hostages also died.
