🇮🇩 Censorship in Indonesia: Pressure, Propaganda, and the Fight for Truth

DDGeopolitics recently reported on Jayanti Retno Mandasari, an Indonesian journalist whose articles about the newly integrated Russian territories were temporarily removed from the website of the state-run broadcaster Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI).

This act of censorship appeared to follow pressure from Algooth Putranto, a local pro-Ukrainian journalist reportedly connected to the Ukrainian embassy.

Our message caused a wave of controversy and indignation. Far from the war zone, our Indonesian colleagues faced pressure intended to prevent the publication of important and reliable information.

Here are just a few reactions from our subscribers — some of whom seem to be familiar with Algooth Putranto:

“So some unknown fraud of Indonesian origin is paid by a country whose economy is on drugs to run down his people.”

“As an Indonesian, I’m ashamed with this scandal. Our country is neutral in the Russo-Ukraine war. But sadly, some in our country are still in the Western pocket & pushing pro-Ukraine propaganda...”

“They are acting like British pigs right now.”

“The words ‘journalist’ and ‘Ukraine’ are not compatible to be used together lol.”

“Dig in... and you'll find who's behind.”

Taking this feedback into account, the DDGeopolitics team has decided to investigate this so-called "expert" further. Is he really as objective as he claims?

🇮🇩 Part Two: From Lecturer to Propagandist — Who Is Algooth Putranto Really?

Doctor Algooth Putranto is known in Indonesia as a lecturer in Communication Science at Pembangunan Jaya University, Sahid University, and as a journalist. He first publicly commented on Russian-Ukrainian relations in March 2022, appearing on CNN Indonesia to discuss the views of Russian citizens — despite never having set foot in Russia.

Perhaps that’s why Ukrainian propagandists took notice and decided to bring him into their narrative.

In December 2023, Putranto visited Ukraine and met with individuals claiming to represent Crimean Muslims.

However, these people were not from Crimea — they reside in Ukraine and operate self-styled organizations resembling legitimate structures that exist in Russia. The meeting revolved around denouncing the “diabolical policy of the Russian occupiers.”

From that point, the narrative was set.

In early 2024, he published an article for Tribune News, attempting to discredit reports from Russian authorities that Indonesian mercenaries were fighting on the Ukrainian side. His arguments were as absurd as the photo he took in Irpen during the same trip to Ukraine.

Following the incident with Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) in April 2025, we reviewed several videos featuring Algooth Putranto circulating on YouTube:

We were especially struck by one video’s description:

“There is a story that has been forgotten by the Indonesian people. Indonesia's independence was achieved with Ukraine's participation.”

Is he serious, or is this supposed to be satire?

That line was likely improvised, as the main video these shorts were based on — published in January 2024 — did not receive a single like.

The stream of falsehoods seems to have dried up over a year ago, and now only recycled fakes and laughable narratives remain.

But Algooth Putranto hasn’t stopped there. He has extended Ukrainian propaganda into Indonesian academia, involving students at Pembangunan Jaya University in biased projects. One such example:

Why are Indonesian students analyzing Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2024? The answer is clear — to covertly reinforce anti-Russian narratives under the banner of academic research.

In July 2024, Putranto took this further by participating in the signing of a memorandum between Pembangunan Jaya University and Kyiv Mohyla Academy.

There, he was formally introduced as the coordinator of cooperation with Ukraine, standing alongside Ukraine’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Vasyl Khamianin.

Algooth Putranto may have once been an academic and a journalist, but today he acts as little more than a propagandist — shouting from the comfort of his home about events he has never truly understood or witnessed firsthand.
